Sarting my 2003 Disco after a year of storage
Hello and thank you in advance for your sage advice!
I have been out of the country for about a year, and have stored my 2003 Discovery in a storage unit for that time. I am concerned about starting it up as there will likely be little residual oil on the internal engine parts. I would like to avoid causing any engine damage due to unlubricated metal against metal friction. Can someone advise the best way to avoid this? Is the only alternative just pouring some additional engine oil in to try tp provide some lubrication?
Additionally (and embarassed to ask) but can someone place a picture of the engine oil cap/opening, I don't remember ever seeing it (Is it under plastic engine cover) I have always had the dealer do my service. (and to think I used to pump gas when I was 16!)
Anyway, thank you all very much. And if someone can recommend a battery replacement (brand) they have been happy with, that would be great too).
Cheers,
Brad

Brad,
Ideally, you would prime the oil pump before starting. Not an easy way to do this, so just fire it up and don't hit the throttle for a few minutes. Make sure the oil light is not on.
Do not add oil unless it needs it. This won't help anything.
I am guessing you didn't fog the cylinders, and since you don't know where the oil cap is, I doubt you will be able to pull the plugs and fog the cylinders before starting. Not cutting you down, just trying to get a feel for your abilities.
It should be ok to fire up. Just make sure all of the fluids are ok before doing so....
PS. fogging is an oily spray that you spray into the cylinders through the spark plug hole. This will protect your cylinder walls from any rust that may develope from condensation due to air in the cylinders and temp changes. It is a practice used by many boaters when winterizing for storage. Helps on start up, and if you are planning on storing for a long time again, I would recommend it, if you can pull the spark plugs easily....

Turn the key and let it idle for 5-10 minutes, drive it slowly and get the oil changed a day after getting it out of storage.
Top off the gas tank with fresh premium and on the second tank of premium add a bottle of injector cleaner.
As for a good battery, AutoZone has good ones, so does Sears.
