Old thread but some good info here. New quick question: Can I reuse the axle nut or is that an absolute "no-go?"

 

Since you have to punch the rim to lock it, re-using it isn't really possible.

 

Ok - I was thinking that you have to pull the nut off, the rim would be bent back and when you piut the nut back on, you could punch it in a different location.

 

It will probably tighten to about the same rotation, so it might not be possible to punch it in a different position. It also tends to get a bit mangled when you pry the rim out in order to get the nut off.

 

I've replaced tons of hubs, I have always reused the nut. I never replace them.

You just peen them right back into the groove. That is for nothing more than making sure the nut doesn't back off on its own. Even a miniscule burr hanging into the groove would achieve that.

 

Don't reuse it. I've reused it once when I was waiting on a new one to ship, but as soon as it got there swapped it out. Reusing an axle nut fits into the high-risk, low-reward quadrant that's best to stay out of.

 

Don't want to start an argument here, but I have to pretty strongly disagree. There is virtually no risk to reusing the axle nut. The chance of it backing off is, and I'm not exaggerating, zero. So long as some part of it is peened back over that is, or if it is torqued back down good. Optimally both should be true and you"ve got double redundancy. Like I said, I've reused a ton of axle nuts with no issue. Probably multiple dozens at this point on various makes if vehicle.
