Default Seat cover replacement

Good day all. I have a disco II that I bought knew in 2000 and try to keep in mint shape. Recently purchased a replacement front driver seat bottom leather cover from rover. 550$ crazy. Has anyone done a replacement install on this. Is it hard. Any advice would be much apprcted. Thank You.

I'm not 100% sure I understand what you're talking about, but I think you mean the cover for the foam seat under your ***.

The install isn't too too hard, but you'll be better off leaving it to an upholstery specialist who will have all the right tools.

Basically your seat is a peace of orange foam with a couple of thick wires embedded into it. Those wires attach to the cover, which has wires of its own sewn into it, with metal hog rings. These hog rings are a bitch to deal with because you'll inevitably be trying to squeeze them together (or apart) in a very tight space. I've replaced a seat cover and used zip ties instead of the hog rings, which was a ton easier. I don't notice any difference or discomfort because of it.

Other than that taking it out and reinstalling is pretty straightforward. Watch for the location of several metal clips that hold the fabric pieces together toward the back of the seat; you'll want to reinstall them correctly. I'd recommend taking the whole seat out of the car to do this.

May be good advice. No personal experience to add. Manual ref. for you.

$550? Is it too late to return it? Good condition used seat bottoms can be had for well under $100. The passenger side fits the driver side, so you can find them easily. Plus, I would guess that the new bottom will stick out like a sore thumb compared to the other aged components.

If it's too late to return it, great purchase and good luck with the install!

I had the fabric in my seat bottom (officially known as the squab) redone at a custom car upholstery shop, they wanted the seat removed from the truck first. All new fabric and their labor cost me around $275.

While you have it apart might be the only chance you get to replace the broken seat heater element too.

With all due respect to the original poster you're driving a 16-year old truck. Too bad you already bought the leather; you likely can't return it.

More and more donor trucks are showing up in local salvage yards (I too am in Charlotte), some with decent seats that could allow you to get done what you need at a fraction of the price and with less effort too.

I have a D1 and salvage seat covers in decent condition are rare. For $275, did you get leather or vinyl? I had a shop quote two seat bottoms in leather and it was at least $600, mostly because of the material price. I'm thinking of going vinyl.
