Secondary air pipe pump valve or solenoid?

Hi Mike thanks for always replying to my threads.
New pump new filter no car washes no rain no water.
I do not want to kill yet another pump specifically what causes exhaust to back feed towards pump? I have a mighty vac hand pump how do i test egr valves and solenoids???
I have bought new pump vac lines solenoids and valves from AB Rover parts but I do not want to keep throwing new parts at the situation, only to have them burn up. Is it the **** poor routing of vac lines or service life of egr valve, egr solenoid or what?
I like to work on my 1969 Mercedes Benz 280SL whenever I can my wife's Disco is taking up the whole damn weekend.
I saw a thread in a vw forum that raises a concern about loose rivets on pump. Anyone else want to throw in their two cents?
