Your best bet is probably going to be a filter change and a fluid flush. The pan is pretty easy to get off. The bolts are 10mm iirc, and a torx head bolt holding the filter on. That's really easy to remove. Shouldn't take more than an hour to drop the pan and replace the filter, if that long. You might want to flush the fluid twice, because as you probably already know, the pan only holds about 40% of the transmission capacity.

I have been as far as having the valve body off of a DII, and it's pretty straightforward.

Make sure you check your front driveshaft for the grease zerks at the double cardon joint. If it doesn't have them, put rebuilding or replacing that shaft at number one on your list of things to do. (enough can't be said about that).

Good Luck

Aaron

I forgot to mention, the transmissions are fuggin bulletproof on these things. You really have to beat the **** out of them to get them to fail. Hell, on the 2001 that I bought, the front driveshaft had broken off and busted a hole in the trans casing. I patched the hole with JB Weld, put fluid in it, and the thing shifted smooth as glass. It had more problems than I could deal with at the time (the PO was clueless), so I sold it to a friend of mine and bought the '95.

clean out the connector on the transmission to be on the safe side.

but if it wont shift maybe a flush might help.

its possible to ruin a land rover transmission but only because people don't change the fluid ever.
