Default serpentine belt walking off PS pulley

I have an 02 Disco II. The serpentine belt was replaced due to normal wear last fall. A few days ago the belt shredded itself. I just installed a new belt today and it seems to want to track off the back side of the power steering pump pulley. Removing the belt I checked all of the pulleys to see if they would move and found that I can move the PS pulley about 1/8 inch in and out on its shaft. I still have power steering so I dont think the shaft is broken but cannot figure out why the belt wants to walk off the pulley. None of the pulleys make any grinding noise when turned. I checked for loose bolts holding the puley to the pump and they were fine as well. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like the bearings are shot. That would require either a pump rebuild, or a new pump. 1/8th of an inch might not sound like much, but that's a LOT! New pumps start in the $225 range on up. Considering that our PS pumps are pretty crappy to start with, it's not a part I'd trust taking off a wrecked vehicle, but of course that's entirely up to you...

That is what I was afraid of. Will I need to replace the pulley as well or just the pump?

The pump will come with a pulley.

Careful buying rebuilt p/s pumps, very few companies make a good rebuilt unit. Check out British Parts of Utah for a decent deal.

Does anyone know if the Chevy S-10 pump will fit a D2? It's a direct drop in on a D1, and is more powerful than stock at a quarter the price.

D1 pump won't work on a D2 so it is safe to say no it won't work.

That is a good piece of information, how does one know these things? What else is a direct drop in?

I concur - A permanent place for information like this would be handy. Is there a write up somewhere?
