Default Service engine light

I have a '97 disco with 84,000 miles and the service engine light came on. I have read some of the other threads and have read that it is just a maintenance check up. I called the dealer and they tried to charge me $250 for an oil change, to get the light off, and "other maintenance." I was wondering what the "other maintenance" might be. I have also seen that the service engine light is just for upkeep on the lr and not problems with the engine. So, I was also wondering if I turned the light off myself if it would end up haunting me down the road, or if it is ok?
Any answers help. Thanks.

I don't think your truck does not have a maintenance checkup light, the DII's do not. If you get a light that means you have a problem of some sort. Get the codes read at autozone for free and get back to us ASAP.

You have both a maintance light and a check engine light on your D1. What color is the warning light, Red or Yellow?

The light that is on is the red service engine light. I have had the car since it had 50,000 miles and i have only seen the yellow check engine light come on, never the red service engine light.

You might do a search for resetting the service light. There is a relay behind the passengers kick panel, looks like a relay with a Rover emblym on it. Should see a hole that you can stick a paper clip wire into to to short/reset the system.
