Default service engine light on

My service engine light is on and I've alreadly done a search on how to turn it off. I did stick a pin in the red box on the passenger side kick panel but that didn't seem to do anything. Can anyone help with the exact way to turn the service engine light off? Thanks.

Did you stick a pin in the hole while the ignition was on, I believe you must do that.

The key does need to be on and you need to short across the two
wires in the box.
I found that a small screw driver worked well.
