Default Shattered new oil pump gears?

Hello everyone. '00 D2 with a new AB long block installed 20K miles ago by an excellent indy mechanic. It's been wonderful, no problems, nothing the install in April of '21.

Until two weeks ago. Loaned it to my son who called me and said the oil light was on and the valves were clattering. He correctly, immediately pulled over and shut it off.

Towed to my mechanic, find no oil pressure. After calling the shop out east that AB uses for their engines for ideas as to where to look, my mechanic pulled the timing cover and found that the oil pump had failed. To the credit of Atlantic British and the rebuild shop, they are covering the parts (still in discussion about the labor). Luckily it shut off in time, only metal bits found in the oil filter. Changing the rod bearings as a precaution.

The rebuild shop said they have never had such an incident with new parts from AB. I put it out there, has anyone else had such a situation, or was mine a "one off" fluke?

Let me know and thanks!

I don't think it's a "one off". AB seems to be hit or miss. Customer service seems to be good on engine warranty. More than a few engine issues have been reported in the forum.

Sorry to hear this happened to you but glad to hear that AB stands by their engine warranty.

The engine builder may have just gotten a bad batch of parts....my local LR indy mechanic complained quite a bit even before covid supply chain issues that even the Pro-rated parts are hit-n-miss quality-wise and he was having to be extremely careful to avoid re-work.
