Default 03 Disco Oil Pump Rebuild

After oil change, the oil pump light started coming on at idle only but goes off as soon as gas pedal is pushed. Mechanic checked pressure and said pressure was low and oil pump needed replacing. Bought a rebuild kit and was told to leave the dowel pins out. Anyone had any luck rebuilding an oil pump for these cars? Any advice?

It is strange that your oil pump failed after an oil change. Something tells me that your oil pump lost its prime. Oil pumps on the 03's are prone to failure but not after an oil change. That is to much of a coincidence but I guess its possible especially with a Land Rover.

Default check cover

You need to check the cover and plate that houses the gears. The problem is that the dowels where miss drilled so the crank is turning with a out of line oil pump. The gears start machining the inside of the housing as well as the gears and eventually break as well as put metal shavings throughout your motor. Some have tried this with great success. I would take a look at the inside of your cover first. If it is scored you will need a complete new one...

Good luck, Chris
