Default shelf, under driver's seat, on frame, what is it for?

On my 2004 Discovery, below the driver's seat, welded to the frame, is a shelf like three sided box affair that is obviously there for a reason, but what is the reason?

Possibly the mount for the HK audio amplifier?

I think he means on the frame of the truck. SLS air compressor would go there if your truck was equipped with SLS.

Correct. That's where the compressor sits if you have SLS. Mines disconnected. Want it?

I was thinking about putting an on board air compressor there for air in up the tires after wheeling

Save your money for a PowerTank, I go wheeling about every other weekend in Colorado. I picked up a 10lbs Powertank on CL for $130. Plus you can run numatic tools on the trail, and blow out your messy cargo area. You always have air and its about $16 to fill up the CO2 tank. Any company that services fire extinguishers will refill your tank for a deal. I have filled my tires up from 20psi to 40psi about 6 times on a half tank.

What if you ran a compressor to fill the tank?

The tank is filled with liquid Co2. Same thing that carbonates Coke. The tank when pressurized will run about at 160psi, so plenty of flow for power tools and you can fill all 4 of your tires up faster than your buddy with the Via Air compressor can fill 2 tires. The Powertank has a regulator on it like a scuba tank...so you can control the air pressure once the main valve is open.
