Default Shopping for a Disco today

Hello all!! I am currently looking a 1995 Dico to replace my current SUV, a 1991 Pathfinder. I do all my own maintence and am very handy with a wrench. I have several BMW engine swaps and mods under my belt so I am not afraid to get my hands dirty.

I will be looking at a 1995 LR Discovery today with a five speed tranny and 150,000 miles. The owner is asking $5500 for the truck and I may end up driving it home. What should I inspect on this LR before I lay down my hard earned $$? Thanks in advance...

Check leaks, obviously (no brainer). Also, make sure the the Hi/Low gearbox shifts properly. Owners whose trucks were street queens may never have engaged low gear, and it may stick. Also, check for water stains where the headliner meets the windshield.
thats my short list.

Ask for service records.
The tranfer case will whine it a LR, most LR's leak a little
oil look for other leaks. PS, trany, the big silver ***** on the
frt end next to the wheels should not leak or have any rust.
Good Luck. Mike

Well, I did the test drive/inspection and the Discovery was leaking oil everywhere it could and the transmission made a loud clunk when placed into reverse. I passed on this one and moved onto eBay where I purchased a '97 Discover with 88,000 miles and a auto slush box. I will pick the LR up next weekend and I will preform the same inspection before driving it home. The owner said that it was leak free and shifted as good as new. Any I different I should look for on this year model of Discovery? Thanks for your post...

The loud clunk was the transfer case the splines in it are worn LR changed the design
after a few years. Mine does it to. The 97 will have more goodies ,
& still be better off road than Disco II.
The most important thing is the service records this will tell you if
it has been taken care of.
Most of the V8's have lower miles than other cars and most have few
off road miles.
See if it was used for towing, the 4.0 is a good motor but not that
strong for towing so they would have to put there foot in it more.
