Yes, invest in a land rover if you are mechanically inclined or if you know a mechanic that won't jip you. Buy one if you can look over some of the procedures shown on this website and you can answer "Ya, i think i can do that". If you can look over the procedure to fix the ABS modulator to permanently fix the lights on the dash and say "yes, i can do that", then by all means buy a land rover. But if you are not mechanically inclined then don't go near one. There is no diffrence in a disco 2 than any other vehicle on the road. In fact, i'd say a disco 2 is a highly reliable vehicle. But its now over 10 years old, and things will go wrong. If your door actuator breaks and you can't fix it yourself for 70 bucks, be prepared to pay 700.00 to the mechanic. Or if the lights on the dash bother you and you're afraid to address the problem by removing your modulator, be prepared to pay 100's, if not 1,000's to a mechanic to replace parts that won't even fix the problem!
There's no unsolved mysteries or ghosts living in discovery 2's. Only in the heads of dishonest land rover mechanics. They are a simply, straight forward vehicle for any mechanically inclined person. And relatively cheap to operate if, and only if you don't mind getting your hands dirty every once in a while.
