Default Silicon gaskets

Hi all, I am planning on taking the discovery off the road for a month to change the oil, front cover seal, check the oil pump, water pump etc etc etc.

My question is what are people's view on using silicon gaskets rather than normal gaskets? Worth the risk....?

My mate is convinced on his Subaru which is 18 years old, travelled 235k kms, but is mint!! Doesn't leak one jot.

Thoughts?

Yes , there are engines that are designed so they can be assembled using only silicone
as gasket , but Rover V8 isn't one of them,
It has to do with machining and design of parts, rather than which method is better,

Over the years I have read examples of people who swear by "the right stuff" for water pump gaskets and other kinds. The paper gaskets seem sort of ridiculous to me... but I use them.
