Simple Stereo Change
I have a mk2 and all I want to do is simply take the old stereo unit out (who uses tapes anymore) and replace it with a very basic new unit that has a CD player. With much searching I have discovered how to remove the existing unit, but could someone advise me on what I should be buying that will replace it with the minimum hassle. I'm not after all the bells and whistles just an old fashioned bog standard radio/CD player.
I don't have any specific model to recommend to you, but I would suggest that you look for something that is also Bluetooth capable. Even CDs are going the way of the dodo bird.
That said, I have a six disc CD changer that mounts under the passenger seat that is plug and play. It's yours if you want it, for the cost of shipping only. I would be happy to see it go to a good home. I abandoned it when I moved to a GROM Audio Bluetooth adapter several years ago.

One thing to think of is if you want to charge your phone I got a radio with rear usb and routed an extension that goes out next to the shifter to plug a charger into. Could just get a front usb but wires would stick out
Crutchfield.com is where I get my stuff from. I'm not an audiophile or anything- they just tend to have a good prices and good set up sheets. I replaced my (broken) stock radio with a $30 unit with USB input on the front. In addition to the actual radio you do need a wiring harness (which crutchfield will recommend the part) to connect the new radio to the factory wiring. Just crimp them together and off you go!
I second crutchfeild. I am alittle more of an audiophile I have aftermarket stereo, rewired all my speakers in the car with thicker wiring, sub whole 9 yards with sound deadoning. Crutch field is perfect for someone who isn’t sure because they give you all the parts required
I put in a single DIN unit with a flip up screen. Works perfectly after four years.
