Default Smoke from console

I would sincerly appreciate any help I can get from from anyone who thinks they might understand whats going on with my 00 Disco. Here's a list of what's happened so far and what I have done about it. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

1. Truck overheated and blew head gasket
2. Head gasket repaired but shop technition said had to beat on starter to get it to start after installing the gasket
3. Truck worked for 1 day after getting back from shop and wouldn't start. Would only make a single KNOCK sound when key was turned. All dash lights, windows and locks work, just no ignition.
4. I purchased a reconditoned starter from Autozone and installed new starter.
5. Truck started right up and worked for 1 day then quit and went back to making the single KNOCK sound when key was turned in ignition.
6. Pulled the new starter out, took it back and exchanged it for another one. Installed new starter but this time truck would not start and continues to make the single Knock sound when trying to start it.
7. I have checked all fuses and cables to and from battery/starter
8. noticed some some smoke coming from console so I am looking into connections...

FYI: I had Autozone test my old starter and they said it was fine. I also had them test each of the starters I got from them and they both tested fine. As of this point truck has new starter installed.

Has anyone come across this issue before or can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't believe this is a starter issue but most certianly an electrical issue..

Thanks again

Ground wire from battery to frame is loose or corroded, putting ground circuit thru the emergency brake. This can be quickly checked by the old school method of using a jumper cable (just one, not two) and attaching one end to (-) battery and the other to a bare bolt on the frame or engine. At the starter amps of close to 400 peak, this will burn small stuff, so select something that can take the current.
