So what should I carry as a spare off the pavement?
Unless, you're going on an expedition across the Sahara I wouldn't get too carried away w/ spare parts. If u have a CDL fitted there's no need to lug around an extra prop shaft.
Now, If you're concerned about the prop breaking loose, you should think about how you're going to lug around an extra Tranny
Bring a good set of tools, duct tape, cable ties (preferably, large size), a AAA card, and a cell phone charger.

I really like the RAVE PDF downloaded and stored on my phone. To me it beats carrying around the print version.
And yes, in addition to the brake light switch and XYZ I of course have an assortment of fuses plus a couple relays. I do also carry a spare serp belt because I happen to have the old one lying around. I know it's not new, but it would do in a pinch. I also carry a small assortment of wrenches, ratchets and sockets, enough at least to change the water pump which I know is getting old at 148,000 miles. I don't carry a spare pump, but if I'm on a road trip I figure I can get my hands on the pump but I don't want to pay someone else to change it. I should probably put in the new one next time it's time for a coolant swap. Same for the alternator.
