I am getting my High Pressure Hose to day hopefully, and am wondering if anyone has a method to bleed the power steering system solo.

I am going to get it all together, and fill the system, give it time to fill a bit, and reassemble the ancillaries I have off.

Then open the bleed screw and hope that the pressure of the fluid/gravity get some to come out. Then shut it, possibly blow on the reservoir to get it to come out.

Then start the car, run it for a second or two then turn off, and refill. Turn car back on, turn the wheel all the way to the right, shut off, refill. Then repeat to the left.

Do this until it is full.

Is my logic sound here?

 

Couldn't you just use a small hose on the bleed nipple and run this solo with a 1/4 turn in the line? get in the truck, start it, turn the wheel to your desire and then get out and close the valve

just noticed. I need to pay better attention i guess.

 

I just filled it up, and let it sort of settle in with gravity, it was mostly full by the time I turned the wheel. Closed the nipple prior to starting. Seems to have worked.

 

I just cracked the bleeder and let gravity do work while I finished assembly. Then closed bleeder when fluid started coming out. Jacked up one tire off ground. Started truck and very slightly opened bleeder so fluid was coming out slowly, filled reservoir to top. Then I turned wheel lock to lock a few times till fluid level was at max. Shut bleeder. So quiet I'm surprised it works

 

Which bleeding/purging procedure ensures removal of all metal shavings and particles lodged everywhere in the fluid path in the event of a -say pump failure- ?
Replacing the pump with a new one without clearing every crevice in hoses, gearbox, reservoir... will cause a failure again, soon.

 

They do make inline magnets you can put on your low pressure side of the system if you wanted to. Summit Racing makes them.

 

I had some black particulate in my system for who knows how long. Noticed when cleaning the reservoir, and I cleaned that all out with Brake cleaner. The system was totally empty, and the power steering box new to me, along with the hose, so I do not believe there is anything in there. I also recently did the pump, and the old one did not explode or anything, it was just leaking.
