Default Somewhat of an Emergency: Belt Tensioner ripped out of Alternator Bracket

Talk about bad luck. I was just at ORielly's auto parts trying to order a seal if possible through a local store and as I'm leaving the place, I hear a squeel. I stop the truck and inspect and the belt tentioner is loose. It is not only lose but the belt somehow managed to rip the belt tensionor out of what appeard to be the altenator assembly. I noticed some fine metal shavings. I fear that some of it may have gone inside the engine, but it didn't look like much, it seems like a pretty clean break.

Has this ever happened to anyone? I noticed no signs before any of this, no squeeling, overheating, nothing. I could understand the pulley going out, but taking out the altenator bracket too? Seriously?

I guess what I'm wondering is this a common failure and could something elese being on? But now is as good a time as ever for it fail as I'm about to embark on HG job.

Well Mike, it seems I can get a used altenator bracket fairly cheap. But should I invest in a new part? I don't think there would be much difference in the strength of a new vs used bracket. I'm thinking that somehow the belt just got an awkward angle on the pulley and that's how it was able to rip out of the bracket.

I will be getting a new tensioner though.

Are aftermarket tension pulley's okay for our trucks? Or is it best to go with genuine? Dayco has some good prices but I'm weary.

Okay well here's an update. I was able to snag a Gate's tensioner pulley for $50 bucks at Orielly's ( All thanks to Bosshogt). The part is listed for the pre 03-04 Discovery's but works just the same at a cheaper price.

As for the altenator bracket I strongly encourage everyone to look at their local pull apart junk yard. The bracket is listed at $330 at Altantic British. Fortunately I was able to snag one off a 2000 Discovery today for $10. I felt like I got back at the stealership today.

I wold go with a used bracket after inspecting it for molding flaws or cracks, as I mentioned before, they rarely fail.

This happened to me this morning too.
Seems to be a problem this month......I also just replaced the pulley 2 months ago too.
Found the bracket at a junk yard for 30 bucks!
