Default Serpentine belt and tensioner

how common is it for the Tensioner to go out and cause the Serpentine belt to shred, and does 280 dollars sound like a normal price to get this replaced. No other choice but to have the car towed to the shop as i was 40 miles from home and towing fees would have been through the roof. Has 141,xxx miles and have had other cars at that mileage and nothing has ever happened to the tensioner or the belt had to be replaced, they were replaced as preventive maintenence. It is a 97 HSE

i know that it's the pulley that that bites the dust, i was just wondering how many times it's happened to someone and how much it cost them
