Default Spare tire carrier, 6 bolts vs. 4

I just flipped my spare tire carrier to accommodate 265 x 75 x 16 tires.

The middle 2 bolts don't line up. I was going to drill holes for them but noticed those are not just holes drilled for each bolt. There is extra support inside the door for each bolt. So drilling holes may not add any real support.

Any bad experiences with just going with bolts?

Thanks

yes, the door design is a six tube frame for tire support. drill the holes and use all the bolts. Six bolts by OEM, and you are putting on a larger heavier tire. If you have a rear wiper arm, it will hit the flipped tire carrier. If you cut the carrier to accommodate the arm, the carrier is now structurally weakened, so you may have to weld some extra metal on to it.

Drill the new holes on the carrier, not the door. Use the steel spacer that is in place from the factory, flipped over, and that will serve as a template for where to place the new holes on the carrier.

FWIW, I didn't bother with the center bolts. The load is being carried by the upper and lower bolts.

This^^^^

You don't drill the door...the carier needs new holes.

Thanks everyone.

I was over thinking it when I flipped the spacer bar.

Flip the carrier but not the spacer bar.

Simple pilot hole from the interior of the door through the existing tunnel and then a full size drill bit from the outside to enlarge the new hole in the carrier.

Job done.
