Hello, I am just going to get right to it. I have a 2003 disco 2 that has steering issues.
What I have replaced are the steering pump and gear box.
In addition to replacements I have flushed the steering fluid twice, second time was after learning about the ACE fluid. I have also adjusted the gearbox as well, it made the steering wheel not feel safe whatsoever, so I reverted back to the beginning.
I am wondering what my next options should be? I am looking at replacing the intermediate drive shaft and/or the steering column. I'll post a video of how the steering wheel is acting when I am turning the h
wheel.
My vehicle is a LHD vehicle not RHD.
Maybe jack up the front to first check steering with tires off the ground. Should turn smoothly lock to lock, even if the engine is off. Next lower to ground and have an assistant rock the steering wheel to find loose or damaged connections (engine on). Otherwise we're just guessing.
Pretty good Trailfitter video online for Discovery or Defender steering checks. The Workshop Manual has an excellent section about how to refurbish and adjust the steering box.
When the front end is lifted, the steering gets tough on the right from about 3 onward. On the left it is between 10 and 9 onward. And I have already adjusted the gearbox it just made the reaction time of turning delayed.
Maybe disconnect the drag link from the drop arm and check. If stiffness goes away, then problem is with a hub or hubs. If still stiff, then either the gearbox or shaft u-joints. U-joints are easy to remove, check for wear, clean, lubricate.
Both my trucks needed new bearings and adjustment shims at the hubs. One had a bearing smashed to bits.
