Default Sprag Clutch? Now what?

Can only get DII to move by putting in 1st gear, then going up through the gears with shifter. Fine once I get to Drive, but have to start all over again through 1st at any stop/slowing to under @5mph.

Fluid good, told by my mechanic it's a spun out sprag clutch - Options given: Rebuild my transmission (85,000 miles on 2000), buy rebuilt, buy used. Would certainly appreciate any input re problem and recommedation on options, as well as experience on costs.

Thanks Kindly,
Jim

Should have mentioned - I've owned since new, so know history which has been pretty decent given the vehicle we're talking about.

How often was it serviced?
Have you taken it to a tranny shop and had the tranny ecu read for codes?

Are you sure this is a one way clutch, I need to check the transmission control / sequence table. I think it is a valve body / solenoid issue, where hydraulic fluid pressure is not directed to the forward clutch when the shifter is in drive but when the spool valve is moved into 1st gear position manually, it engages first gear. I will let you know.

Sounds like a clogged filter to me.
Change the trans fluid and filter.

Just checked. Unfortunately, freewheel #15 in the attached diagram has failed. Whenyou are in (D), the front planet gear carrier locks through freewheel #15 against the transmission housing, allowing the vhicle to move forward. When it fails, you have no forward movement in (D).

When you select (1), Hold Brake Clutch #8 is engaged to provide over-run braking and thus eliminating the need for freewheel #15.
You tech was right, I spoke too soon in my previous post.

Attached arethe components diagram, the (D) & (1) power flow and the symptom description / failure explanation / cause.
Shifting manually gets tiring, the other alternative is a rebuild or a used good transmission with low miles.

i have the same deal on my D1... have had it since i bought it... havent had any problems other than having to manualy shift the trans... i took my rover offroad with the offroaders association i ride with and had no problems... from what i have been told the trans cannot really damage itself any more than it already has... it shouldnt go out and shouldnt leave you stranded, it will just be a minor inconvienece... i have put about 3000 miles on mine in the present condition and haent really noriced any change... it takes a little longer to shift when it is cold but other than that its perfectly fine...

JimmyG, you can continue driving your DII like Discoxd is doing with his 97 DI XD. If you run across a low mileage (<50K Mi) transmission for less than $ 1 K you may consider a replacement. R&R the transmission on a DII is relatively simple and low cost.

The nice thing about your situation is that you can continue driving. You are lucky that the forward clutch pack did not fail. That would have stopped all movement forward in any gear.

A rebuild at a transmission shop like Amoco is too expensive and I do not recommend it.

Thank you all for your comments and knowledge. Confirmation and details of the problem are most helpful and assuring - thanks unimoged. discoxd, thanks as well for the first-hand experience. Good to know I can still get around without causing further damage.

Does anyone have any experience with rebuilt transmissions (vs rebuilding mine) from LR/other sources? Maybe double the cost of used (@1K vs @2K), but with some warranty, from my understanding. Trying to weigh risk/cost between the options and would be helpful to hear any/all perspectives.

Thanks again,
Jim

www.car-part.com dig around on there and you should be able to get a pretty good deal on a low mileage trans... i will be tracking one down as soon as this job i am on is over...
