sputtering, surging, dying
I have an 01 Disco II with ~165K miles
I started having issues where the engine would surge for about a second when sitting at a traffic light...
It then started just dying when stopped (runs fine while moving seemingly) - would readily start
Then I had the occasional trouble starting it after driving somewhere
Over the last few months, I have replaced the cam sensor, crank sensor (both with the help of the auto shop teacher at the high school where I work), plus MAF sensor and throttle position sensor, along with the fuel pump and fuel pump relay!
Ran fine for a while, but now it's doing the SAME THINGS!
All these things are sporadic - one trip it'll drive perfectly fine, the next it'll surge at one light, then sputter and die 10 minutes later at another...
Finally got some computer software and connector and got a Cam Sensor A error code (unless it's from before I replaced it), plus an evap error code (I know I need to replace head gaskets)(or is it from the removal of the old fuel pump?)
So with all this replaced and a couple of iffy error codes, dos anyone have any ideas what might be causing this sputtering and surging?
Thank you and help! About to drive this thing off a cliff!

Put on the code scanner on the OBD-II port.
Your amber check engine light may have been disconnected.
Plus you may have pending codes.
So look for codes. and then post the codes.
Use http://enginecodemaster.com
to understand codes.

As jfall says, do a scan for codes first then clear them and do a run and see which codes return. I may be wrong but the surging and dying sounds like a defective MAF but I may be wrong.
Nah, don't get too spaced out, the engine is simple but the electronics are mind blowing.

Thanks for the help!
I re-ran the codes (after clearing them yesterday) and got two:
P0134 - O2 sensor circuit no activity detected - Front sensor LH bank open circuit.
and
P0154 - O2 sensor circuit no activity detected - Front sensor RH bank open circuit.
So a faulty O2 sensor? Missing?
I downloaded the 1500 page Disco II Workshop Manual when I got the vehicle, and I see a reference to an HO2 sensor - heated O2 sensor - post catalytic converter... don't think that's the same thing though...
I also find a listing of error codes which tells me the exact thing I found from the site jfall gave me...
So, any other suggestions?
And again, thanks for the responses!!!!!

A little further research...
The Disco II has 4 O2 sensors - 2 before and 2 after the catalytic converter (they are the HO2 sensors I didn't think they were
). According to the site I found, "The front O2 sensor or pre-cat sensor measures the oxygen levels of gases leaving the combustion chamber. The amount of fuel entering your engine is then adjusted based on the oxygen levels of your exhaust gas. As an oxygen sensor ages, it becomes contaminated, reducing its ability to read and react to your vehicle’s O2/gas mixture"
This sounds exactly like what's happening - sometimes it surges, sometimes it sputters, and sometimes it just dies...
Site says I should replace every 60K miles - I have a feeling these are original with 165K miles!
Does this sound like my issue?
Thanks again!

Yep.
see this for sensors
http://jeffreyfall.com/landrover
Get the front ones replaced.
The truck will surge if the sensor works and then stops working and works again.

One thing you could check out is the Idle Air Control valve. This same thing happened to me, surging and stalling. I cleaned it out really good and it hasn't done it again in years. I got weird O2 data and codes when mine stuck, but no IAC codes... I couldn't tell you why, but this happens often. I see it on all different makes and models of cars. I hope this helps. It's at least something to take a look at.
Good luck!
