Squeaky Drive Shaft
Hi all,
Read some other threads on here about this problem. When accelerating my LR Disco2 (1999) makes a chirping or squeaking noise. Saw that I should rebuild the front drive shaft. My question is this:
Instead of spending the $835 for a new front shaft from Atlantic British, how about the front drive shaft conversion kit also available from AB?
Link to kit: Driveshaft Conversion Kit for Discovery I | Land Rover wheels, tires, hubs, axles
Has anyone tried this "upgrade"? Is it truly a superior product?
Any help would be appreciated. Never done this before and would like to do it myself.
If I don't need to replace the shaft and only centering ball and U-Joints, is that possible to do myself. Very handy with tools etc, just never on a rover, changed u-joints on domestics in the past.
Thank you very much for all of your time!
Ted

That is NOT for the front driveshaft, that is for the rear to covert from the flex coupler to a u-joint at the rear diff.
Go look at your rear diff, you will find a rubber ring attaches the driveshaft to the differential.
You can have your driveshaft rebuilt for about $200.
Have your truck TOWED to a shop to have this done DO NOT DRIVE your truck or you WILL be buying a transmission for it.
You can also take out the front driveshaft yourself and take it in to be rebuilt and then install it yourself.
This will save you some money.

The front prop shaft makes the chirp just before it snaps and impales the transmission, you have detected this, now don't drive another foot.
There is a write up in the tech sticky section (under Discovery 1, it also covers D2) with photos of how to rebuild the shaft, the new U joints are less than $25 each.
See this recent post of someone who had the shaft come apart... https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ghlight=liquid
Like Spike said, No driving. You are one lucky dude. Go buy a lottery ticket.

Thanks all, it is definetly the Ujoint on the front shaft however the mechanic (Rover/Jag only) told me that I have to replace the whole shaft and not just the u joints? It looked to me like everything with the shaft was fine? Any advice?
Thanks,
Ted
Thanks,
Ted
see Propshaft Rebuild - Land Rover Forums - Land Rover Enthusiast Forum, print out for mechanic. Not something to DIY if you only have a patio and two hammers, but a really good vise or shop press will help. Also can buy new and improved from some of our vendors.
Great info thanks. In talking with the owner, we agreed to overhaul it. The original tech I spoke with is fresh from a dealer and, according to the owner, was making a decision without consulting with him. Should have the truck back in a couple hours.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Way to pay attention to your vehicle! That saved you a bunch.
Some people refer to that noise as the "angry sparrows". Usually it's the centering ball on the double cardan joint which makes that noise.
