Default Starter shield

Ok, stupid question of the week….

Ive been wrenching on the machine for 5 weeks as the worlds slowest mechanic.

Does it really need the starter motor shield?
I’m finding it very challenging to get back on.

Thanks in advance!
Incredible group here.

I would say yes. Heat killed the last starter from the exhaust as the PO never reinstalled the shield. It’s pain to get back in but can be done,
with some slight bending.

If you remove the O2 sensor it's much easier to get the heat shield back into place

The heat shield takes some finagling to get it re-installed; here is a video that helped me:

I struggled to get it back in too. I played around a bit and suddenly it slid in without force or bending. Unfortunately I can't remember what I did.
