Default Disco 2 starter spins, doesn't always engage

Hello everyone! I know, I know, I only ever come around here when I have problems! Forgive me.
This has been an ongoing and progressivly worse problem. Im pretty sure it is my starter.
When I turn my key the starter spins but does not engage. Sometimes it engages the first time and starts. Some times it engages the 10th time.. sometimes it engages the 50th time. So far it eventually ends up starting. I am dirt poor and realize that I need to deal with this.
Battery and starter are just under 2 years old and in good shape. Heat sheild? Dont have one. Connections are tight, will clean tomorrow. The smaller wire going to starter is old and getting brittle.
Is there any way this is a connection/power issue and not the starter itself?
Or should I just buck up and order a new starter? Recommendations for replacement starter? Im in Western Canada, 1999 Disco 2 gas 4litre
Thanks

Firstly establish whether there is adequate battery power getting to the starter. If the starter motor spins every time but doesn't engage it is likely to be the Bendix sticking, so, starter off and a new Bendix complete or clean up, check and lube the existing one.

Sorry can you clarify? When you say it's spinning are you referring to the key spinning in the ignition or the starter spinning but the truck not starting?

Two completely different things with two completely different fixes.
