Default starting probs

Help!!
When i start my 89 Disco (Auto) it has started to idle roughly. It then calms down,
When I put it into reverse there is no power. Have to put it back into park where it idles properly.
Eventually it goes into reverse and moves, then as i put it into drive the same happens. No power and the idle is rough.

I actually bought this car from my mechanic thinking that it was looked after, maybe i was wrong?
Any ideas?

I can't help you with a Diesels, we don't have many here in the states to work on so I am not at all familiar with them.

Hi Mike
Sorry dont know what i was thinking. Car is a Discovery TDi Auto 1995 Diesel.
When you say you have no power what exactly do you mean? Will it not move? Does it stall?
Most diesels have a lack of power due to bad fuel or a clogged fuel filter.
Buy a bottle of diesel injector cleaner, dump that into the fuel tank and then have the fuel filter changed. Also check the air filter and see if it is clogged.
Cars from mechanics are the least looked after, they work on cars all day, they dont want to come home and work on theirs for free.
