Steering Column - Squeak/Creak/Groan when turning
I've got an odd noise to track down...so I thought I'd see if anyone encountered it before:
When I turn the steering wheel counter-clockwise, I get a low squeak/creak/groan from what sounds to be somewhere within the steering column, much like a dry door hinge, although much 'smoother' sounding. The odd thing is that it ONLY happens when turning counter-clockwise.
Any thoughts? I pulled the plastic casing off the column for further diagnosis and it's still doing it, so it clearly wasn't a case of that rubbing on the wheel itself...

Does it do it when turning from a stop or does it occur when you are turning at any speed? I have the same sounds from turning from a stop, like when I back out and turn the wheel straight. I have been told it nothing to worry about, it actaully occurs much less now that I got it greased a bit. If it does it at other speeds there might be more to it.
Well, it only does it for larger/quicker movements of the steering wheel, such as backing into a parking space, taking a left turn into a driveway, etc. I'm not worried about it failing or anything of the sort, it's just a rather silly noise to deal with.
Where did you grease yours? Did it take much effort to get to it?

When I bought the truck it was making the sound, and on my first trip to the mechanic I told him about it and help said he looked at it and greased it. So i cant exactly tell you where... From what he said I dont think its to big of a deal unless you feel a vibration. Power steering and steering column damage is out of the question as far as I know.
Mike might have a good suggestion on what you can do. Mine has quit doing it but every once in a while, so if you recently bought it give it a chance to work itself out, mostly if it was just sitting for a while. With a DI, there might be more to it, but your situation sounds JUST like mine. Give mike a chance to chime in.

It was sitting for about 6 months, so something may just need to get shined up again. It's definitely not a power steering issue; it's something in the steering column somewhere from the firewall into the cabin.
