Default Steering wheel re-cover

At 16 years old, the leather on the steering wheel of my newly acquired Disco is pretty worn. There's no saving it, so it needs to be re-covered.

I've seen a few kits out there and searched the forums but nothing has come up. Doing one of those rubber or whatever Wallyworld specials is unacceptable to me, so I was hoping for something better. I see used ones here and there, but even those seem a bit of a crap shoot and will still have some modicum of wear already.

Has anyone done this? I've restitched in a new leather cover for an old BMW with pretty good results, but after searching didn't see that anyone has tried it here.

Any thoughts?

I'm interested also. I have seen some nice leather covers that stich over the top already but would like to actually remove the old and recover it that way.

There are reasonable original used replacements on ebay with no damage if you look harder. I got one few months ago like new.
But if you want to spend more on custom stitching go here for land rover:
Craft Customs Steering Wheels and Wood Dashes

Just shot them and email. Will post the quote when I get it back. Mine is rough on the top from the previous owner. It's the bahama beige on top and bottom and black on the sides

The original used replacement is the best option. I got one for mine that looked brand new for $90. Well worth it. I did ask a couple of local upholstery places and they all said the same thing, you can get a close to new one for under $100.

Yea I've been debating on it and it's hard to tell at times from a picture and waiting and watching for them to come in the junk yards is nothing but a dang waiting game. Some of the local upholstery shops around my house are horrible. I wouldn't let them touch a geo metro much less my other lady

Thanks, guys. Mine is the beige and black as well and I really like it, but is just worn.

I've looked a bit for used wheels and they aren't that expensive, but just wondered about getting the DIY kit not so much to save money, but to get all new leather.

When I got mine, here is the description. It was pristine and the smell was new.

Here are some shots of when I did the old BMW wheel. It's far from perfect, but really not too bad for an afternoon's worth of work.

The back wasn't perfect, but you can't see it anyway.

But I'll look some more at the used ones and see what's up.

I had a beige and black, the beige is what really shows the wear. I replaced mine with an all black wheel.
