Default Steering Wheel Squeak

I've been noticing as it's getting colder a squeak in my steering wheel. I thaught it was the wheel rubbing on the column shroud, but it turns out it's down where the column goes through the firewall. There's a plastc/rubber?? shroud I suppose is to seal out air/grime/etc. If I push up on it and turn the wheel, it dont do it.

Long story short, I'm gonna try spray lube on it first, but if it continues, would it hurt anything to remove or trim it?

Lube it with silicon spray, it wont attract dirt.
If you trim it/remove it all that will happen in water/dirt/road grim/smog/bugs...everything it keeps out will be let in.
It will not hurt anything at all.
