Still Cant get it out of park
Hey guys its my first post and hopefully I have not missed the post somewhere else if so please forgive the rookie. I have a 2001 Disco 2. We were out driving and this light with it showing all axels with an x in the middle came on and would beep everytime I stepped on the brake. Got out to see what the prob was and got back in and cant shift out of park. I got it towed to the house and read on here of some solutions. I have replaced the brake switch and the brake lights work but it still wont shift out of park. I am not sure if I can pop the top off the gear shift because it is wrapped in leather. Any other ideas. I have only had the vehicle about a year so not real sure about working on it, but I'll try anything to get it rollin again. Thanks.

I had a situation like yours, but i got a 98 D1.
i poped off the top of the shifter and found the clip inside poped out....the clip was for the button in the shifter.
I put the clip back in and i was rolling.
I dont know if the D2 has a button on the shifter....hope this helps

As soon as I plugged in the the new switch the light and the beeping went off. So i don't know what to do. I went and looked and there is no alan screw to get the gear shift off. Can I pop off the cover to the gearshift wear it displays the letters for the gears, will that even help. Thanks for all the help.
Pretty sure that on a D2, you just have to pull up on the handle to remove it. The cover is on a D1. When you press the brake pedal to shift out of park, can you hear a click by the shifter?
Also, before going much farther, check all of your fuses. Under the hood and inside the truck.

Do your brake lights come on? Either the switch is faulty, or you have a blown fuse somewhere.
The interlock solenoid should be clicking. Check fuse 25 I think, in your cabin fuse box. Check all of them while you are there. If they are good, move to the engine box.

Ok I checked all fuses all are good inside dash and under hood I still have no clicking noise when i push the brake I have taken the cover off the gear dhift and the when I squeeze the button I see the Lock lift but the metal rod that actually should be sliding is not it is still locked. Also have no brake lights even though I put on a new switch. Could it just be the switch is bad?
If you haven't already, I'd pull the switch out, reconnect the wires, then excercise the switch with your finger & listen for the - park lock solenoid - to click.
The switch is not adjustable on the DI, but your's may be different.
luck,greg

yes. You can run jumper wires from the rear defrost to the third brake light. The traces are on the window. When you turn on the defrost, the brake lights should illuminate. This will also let you shift out of park. Don't leave the defrost on, this is only a temp solution so you can move it, and you will still not have lights while driving (you can use the switch to turn them on while driving and braking for safety)
I would replace the switch. Where did you get your new one?
The plunger is adjustable, it will click in and out, on a D1, pretty sure the same is true for a D2. BUT, this would only cause you to have brake lights on all of the time.
