Still Cant get it out of park
if you just pop up the panel with the gear indicators on it - not all the way off, just pop it up so you can reach under it - on the center console, you will be able to push the little pin that locks the gearshift out of the way. It iss on the backside (towards the rear of the car) on the shifter. This will get you out of park, but does nothing for your no brake lights. When my switch went out, I used my rear fog lights for brake lights, just turned them on each time I was stopping. Got me home with no accidents.
Instead of buying things like that from NAPA or any other similar general type parts chains, you should order from suppliers like Atlantic British or I also use Rovers North.
Both would usually have such parts in stock and could save you time and possibly money as well as having a high level of confidence in getting the correct part. Both usually have both LR orignal parts as well as a good quality house type brand. And their staff are very knowledgeable regarding Land Rover vehicles as well as provide answers to most questions you may have.
That is something to consider on future parts purchases.

I got mine from lrparts.com. came fast, well one did, the other was MIA, told them I didn't get both and they said I did, then refunded me....??? Anyway, I went to get something at an Advance Auto, told the girl it was a 2000 Land Rover Discovery and she asked me if that was made by Toyota....
Ha! I got mine at Autozone. The correct one for my D1 is listed as the manual transmission. They have them reversed in their catalog. I told them, but they said there is no way to change it.
I don't mind the random ignorant person saying I have a nice "landcruiser", but it gets me when they say "nice jeep"...

I had the same problem today...I came out of the grocery store and the Disco won't shift out of park. It's a 2000 Discovery II. The "click" when stepping on the brake is not there. I didn't check to see if the brake lights worked. A friend gave me and the groceries a ride home, but the Disco is still in the store p-lot. I've read through this post... my one question is: Where is the brake switch? What tools will I need to remove/replace/inspect it? My manual is still in the car... Thanks for any help!
Look at the Rave, download it if you don't have it on your PC.
Switch is on back side of brake pedal, I have read that people have done a real simple fix to get home when stranded like yours. Send me $20 in small unmarked bills...... no really, you can unplug the connector from the switch body, temporarily jumper, it's only two pins. One creative fellow wrote of using a paper clip jammed in the contacts of the connector to simulate the switch closure. Others carry a replacement with them just in case............
Hope you find this tidbit helpful if you should encounter the dreaded brake switch failure mode.
