Strange story (kinda long, hopefully entertaining )

I had a key copied at the HW store.
The copied key did not work unless it was held straight into the door lock
and wiggled whilst trying to turn.
Same with the ignition.
The lock cylinders wear - as do the keys.
Making a replica of a worn key does not seem to do well.
Even if they cut a new one from the VIN, the lock cylinders are worn.

When I worked at the dealer, I walked out with a customers key, pushed the button, lights flashed and door unlocked, started it, drove it on my lift, picked it up in the air, started to take the filter off and it looked new. The plate number and the color were different, on the work order. lo and behold 2 2004 discos with the same key, that could unlock and lock each other with the remote, 6 parking spots away from eachother...

I thought about programming both of my key fobs to both cars (Since currently I only have one each), but I figured it might cause problems when they are both within range.

We just went though this with my wifes van, I had a key cut with the VIN, would not work at all.
Took the whole van to the dealer, 4 keys and 15 min with a file later the key works.
Had a copy made of the worn out key and it works great first time.
