Default Stripped/Broken Lugnut

I’m taking off a rear wheel and have had my first bad lugnut. The cover has stripped.

what is my best course of action? Any good methods?

I was able to pound in a 28 and get it off. Luckily I have some extra lugnut with me.

I used to keep a couple cheap sockets around just for that purpose

What I ended up doing when my cover just started spinning was drill a hole in the cover and peel it off with a screwdriver. The steel nut underneath you can put the stock tire iron on.

yep. i had to tear the stainless covers off so many of those nuts that i ended up dumping the whole set and replacing them with the solid lugs that look almost the same as the capped ones.

Nice. I carry a 12-point 28mm socket with me to the junk yards just for this purpose. Someone tried poking a hole to remove the cover (failed), and rounded the corners on the first third of the lug nut (fail). The ol' 28mm socket got 'em off.

Take a flat head screw driver and put the edge on one of the sides of the lug, hammer it in and start peeling off the cover. Take some pliers and rip the rest off.

Use a lug wrench, not an impact or air tool.
