Status update: I found a British shop who says no need to replace the engine unless it is in real bad shape - in which case they'll let me know. They gave rough estimate of $2400 for HG, rings, etc. Still steep but cheaper than everyone else so far.

So, the latest on my engine after having it opened up is that HG's are definitely blown, and it will also need new pistons, rings, etc.; otherwise, long term prognosis on partial repair is 50/50. The shop that opened it up does LRs only. Their best deal for me is 5 Gs to rebuild my engine thoroughly. They said if my goal is to keep my 2004 Disco, it's a good deal and this will really make it last.
