I use a 1/2"-square to 3/4"-hex adapter with a 3/4" ratcheting wrench. Fits easily in and I can pull at optimum angle.

I hadn't seen those adapters before! I'll be picking some up and giving that a try as well. Feels like that would fit a lot better than the ratchet and extensions etc.

I also struggled with cracking the drain plug. I was working with the vehicle on the ground, but on jack stands. It was a PITA. I ended up being successful with the adapter Discorama recommended.
