Default Swap out camshaft.

How hard would it be to swap out a camshaft assuming everything else on the motor is good.

I have a Turner engine with a Kent performance cam and I believe it is causing misfires at idle. I and a good shop in the area have diagnosed everything, checked for vacuum leaks, changed plugs, wires, coils, purge valves, cleaned IACV, new battery terminals, etc...

Runs fantastic with any load or revs (0 misfires on scan tool) but misfires enough at idle to throw CEL after a few minutes which means I can't smog it. You can feel the rough idle as well.

I am thinking I will just swap to the factor style cam to see if it resolves the issue. I have had the lower intake manifold off before so familiar with a partial tear down but curious how much more work it is to swap out the cam from there?

Essentially you need to pull the engine or remove the radiator and condenser from the truck to get clearance to insert the cam.

Oil pan and front cover need to come off obviously. You can move the condenser up out of the way, radiator has to come out. Not too bad otherwise.

If you like, it can be done without removing the intake manifold, using a magnet to get the lifters out and back in.

The shop re-gapped the plugs and seems like most of the misfires went away. The idle is a little bumpy but they said it idled for a few hours with no issues or CEL. I will leave it alone for now. Thanks for the help.

That h180 is a good cam, ran it in my '03 for a few years. Unless lobes are starting to wipe, that will not be the cause of your misfire.

Was the idle a bit bumpy?
