swapping engines and have some questions dico
I have found a '99 disco ii that has a blown head gasket and overheated. The local salvage yard has a '98 disco ii with a good motor @112Kmiles in it. Both are 4.0L V8. My question is will these engines swap out. I have heard that some engines have 1 and some have 2 Air conditions. Will this pose a problem and if so how can make sure that they will swap out before I purchase either one? And on a side note is $850.00 with a 30day warranty to high for that engine? Thank you so much you all do such a great job here to help one another!
You can swap out the short block, but not the entire engine, one is a 4.0 gems engine the other a 4.0 Bosch with completely different management systems, so block only.
If you want to have fun, find a 4.6 to swap in, direct plug and play.

So if i find a 4.6 all I have to do is bolt it in and plug it up with absolutly no modifications? Will it fit the motor mounts an all? Please go into detail about this and why. I am eager to learn!
Two posts same question?
From what I understand the 4.0 and the 4.6 are the same block with the 4.6 having a larger bore for larger pistons hence more volume and more power. It will bolt on with no problem and everything will plug in. I think you may have to get your computer remaped a little to change air/fuel calibration. Dosco Mike will able to elaborate on this.

Plug and play, PERIOD, even the ECU will be fine.
Just remember it has to be a full Bosch 4.6 or a 4.6 short block.
I am still curious, what happened to your old engine?

The truck has 146K on it .The guy tells me that the head gasket blew on the '99 and it over heated. He also says that will crank and drive but not far without overheating. I figure since it's an all Aluminum engine it is pretty much ruined because of the overheating. So best I can tell the head gasket failed. Pretty common isn't it?
When I call salvage yards and ask about these engines they are wanting to know if I need the engine with, or the engine without secondary air injection. What is the difference, and how can I tell Which one I need?
How can I tell if this truck has secondary air injection. Is there a sticker somewhere that ID's this option. And would an engine with it work in a truck that dosn't have it and vice versa?
