Default Symptom line up: engine sputter, intermittent loss of power...

I've had my Land Rover discovery for six years and 65,000 miles. I have more money in repairs in the original purchase price. Not complaining, it's a great tool, and I bought it cheap. The current issue is that there was a sputtering and then intermittent loss of power. The check engine light is on of course. The "s" and "m" (for sadomasochism?) lights on the dash are flashing. So is the "D", for drive. I've read the posts regarding bolts loose or missing on the catalytic converter. I'm out in the sticks with my three young kids and can't really check this out myself now. Is this likely to be my issue? Or something more? I'll be able to drive been to a little mountain town in a bit and could get the mechanic to put it up on a lift and check the bolts. Should I have the plugs changed also? They aren't too excited to see a LanRover in their shop, it's a little over their heads...

Have you had the codes checked for the check engine light? If you have a national chain parts store nearby, they can check the codes for free. Post the code numbers on the forum, don't just take the advise of the parts guy because they most likely have no idea.
While there, get the battery and alternator tested.

check your battery is fully charged, check and make sure the alt. is putting out more than 12 volts, clean and check every ground wire you can find. Flashing M&S&D either means a serious transmission fault or a charging problem , most time its a charging problem.

Yep, I second what drowssap said. My M&S have flashed a couple seperate occasions. I just let it run for a minute, shut it off, and turn it back on again because my battery has just been low both times.
