Default T-case issue

hello everyone

yesterday I was changing the oil of the diffs on my newly bought 98 disco. When I started draining the oil from the t-case... HORROR!! there is metal in the oil. My t-case is grinding itself to bits. I've had the truck for about a week and didn't drive it much. But when decelerating, there was a kind of grinding noise (at least now I know where it's coming from) that was going away as soon as I accelerated or maintained my speed. My guess is that the previous owner didn't check the oil level in it, or a bearing on one of the shafts went bad. Anyway, my brother's a mechanic, I'm gonne ask him to have a look at it.

I didn't road tested it after I changed the oil, assuming it wiouldn't change anything. Now it's sitting in the garage (I'm also waiting for several parts), and I can't go out and play in the mud and the snow (we had a snowstorm in quebec yesterday)

What should I do? Buy a used t-case or have mine rebuilt? Are D1 t-cases known for failure? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Cheaper to buy a good used one instead of rebuilding. Where do you live?

I live in Quebec.... not that much rovers, even less used parts... Shipping to my place is really expensive, somewhere near 200$ plus the custom fees if it comes from outside Canada. I found this one on e-bay:

I think it would be ok for my truck, but I want my brother to have a look at it before I buy it. Thanks

You will have better luck buying a used one rather than rebuilding yours, you will have a hard time finding replacement gears and such.
Darover knows of a place in Canada that is a good Rover parts seller, send him a PM as see what he knows.
