Default Tail Door Latch Nightmare

I'm back with my wife's 2001 Discovery.

I'm really mad about this one and the repair shop owner is probably get a few lumps over this.

Her tail door latch stuck. It's like it was pulled but the door wouldn't open from the inside or out.

She took it to the regular idiots that work on it and after three days, they called and said it needed a new latch ( I seriousely doubt that from what I've read) but the specs call for the same latch being used in 98- 2002...but they had tried two used ones that don't fit.

I got it back not only NOT FIXED, but in pieces with a pile of screws and nuts on the carpet, the latch wrapped in a rag and the speaker hanging out.

I looked for a latch online and everyone seems to be out of stock...any ideas?

BTW, from what I've read, this is a common problem and usually cured by prying the emblem off and lubing.

Have also seen notes about the child latch for that door playing part of this. One of the great reasons to pay with plastic and let card dispute go to work for you. Take some photos of it. By regular idiots do you refer to dealer or an indy shop?

Here's some pages from the factory shop manuals, free download below for the whole thing.

Indy shop! the dealer isn't even on the radar after the $700.00 fuse.

I have a stong dislike of firms that maintain based by original MSRP of the vehicle involved. They see a Mercedes or a Jag or a BMW or a Rover and the price goes up. Even for a damn battery. And every poor student who has lived on graduate school chili and made it through - don't put "Dr" on your checks, or next time they juice it even higher.

I didn't pay them Buzz. They're lucky all I did was take it home.

What I do have though is a door panel in pieces, a latch in pieces and since I didn't take it apart, trying to figure how it goes back together. They took the latch apart too and I don't think I can reassemble it.....soooooo

I have to find a latch somewhere.

This is my wife's car and she loves it. I hate the thing but seem to always have to clean up the mess.

Well, on-line sources, and the parts dismantlers(they can exchange photos of part) we have around this site and others, and salvage yards (you get to practice on some other chassis).

SWMBO most likely will not like having back door out of service, kinda reduces the functionality by a big margin.

Well....I don't think there's a used one in this country so I had to go to the dealer and I'm clinching my fists as I say that.

They do have one in stock for the princely sum of $210.00, so I'm on my way over to get it.
Now I just have to figure out how it goes back in.

Thanks for the manuals...they should help.

I have a Chinese Tractor that causes me less trouble than that thing! Runs better too.

Surprised that none of our dismantlers/parts guys had one. Any salvage yards nearby?
