Temperature Gauge Issues
Can anyone help me? I have owned my 1999 Discovery Series II for a little bit now. But in the past two weeks or so the temperature gauge has been acting up. Shortly after starting the car it rises and the light goes on and then after about 5 to 10 minutes the temperature stabalizes. And then today when the temperature gauge was all the way up and the light was on, it suddenly dropped to freezing, but the light remained on. Then later today the service engine soon light came on. Does anybody know what is going on here?
Any issue of heat needs to be addressed quickly. You could have a tem sensor failing. What about your coolant, have you been having to add any, where is the level?
I would suggest you to your favorite auto parts store and get your codes read, by number and get back to us with them so we may better help.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the heat has not been working. I took it back to the place that I bought it from (about a month or so ago) and they did add some coolant.I haven't checked the coolant level recently. And I'll try and get the codes read soon.
So add coolant today and get it to a shop ASAP and have them do a coolant pressure test and or a chemical test to locate the leak. Soulds like you are probably looking at a set of headgaskets.

It sounds like I am going to need to replace the headgaskets. How much will that cost? Lastly, there are no Land Rover dealerships or anything close to me so does anyone else have any suggestions as where to take it?
So, where do you live?
Are there any small british repair shops close to you?
Are you at all mechanically minded, want to do it your self and save big $$$$'s?
Find a shop and at least get the coolant system presure tested to verify where the coolant is going.
As for a $$ amount, $1800 to $2200 if you have a shop do the work, $300 if you do it.

Last night I checked the coolant and it was extremely low. I filled it up to where it is supposed to be and everything is working fine. There is still probably a leak somewhere. I am not the most mechanically minded person, but if I have good directions then I think I could do it.
If you have all the tools and you have at least 3 days of labor to spare, you might be OK, it is a job but the savings make it worth while.
Don't let it over heat any more till some one makes the repairs or you could damage the block.
