Is there supposed to be an open hole in the transfer case?
New owner trying to learn about my 1999.5/2000 DII.
Had the transmission temp light erradically lighting up so I went under to clean the sensor connections. (this did not help) so I am assuming I may have to replace them.
while under checking around noticed oil leaks from back of engine block and apparent transfer case leak.
also noticed this open hole into the transfer case. is this normal? seams like it should be seal so water/dirt etc does not get in there??
also noticed a bolt that is half out.. Ideas?? Do I need to take action on these?

That's not even anywhere close to your transfer case.
That is the bell housing (behind), and those holes are there in your oil pan so you can get at the torque converter bolts when removing the motor or transmission. They are supposed to have rubber plugs in them.

if i remember correctly; I think there are rubber plugs that go in the big holes one on each side, and it is use to gain access to a bolt.
The bolt mates your engine to the bellhousing I'm assuming it is not loose, someone probably gauld it putting it in and left it that way, you should try and get it out and replace it. It is quite common when you use steel bolts into aluminum threads that is what antisieze is for. If it wont come out or tighten leave it be.

My old ones are so old, swollen/expanded from oil saturation, etc...they would never dream of getting back in place without shrinking them in the dryer...
Just wondering if brand new fit better?
