thin oil really = noisy engine
Holly macro batman. I had Mobil110W30 synthetic oilfor the summer, and just switched ( a few days ago) to Total 5W40 synthetic oil for the coming winter.
My engine was as smooth running and sounding as a brand new V8. But now it sound like someone is tap dancing under there. And I'm not exagerating!!!!
Actually, its almost to a point where I almost feel like flushing those $60 of oil and go back to mobil1 10W30. Its a good thing that we got almost summer weather this week, which I suspect is responsible for the knocking tapping ticking because of the thin oil, and I can't wait for thecold weather to get here to see if it will quiet down.
Anyone else noticed that big of a difference when changing oil ?????

being that i have only had my disco for a day i cannot comment on it,,
but having motorcycles and trying different oils, some made the engine sounds as if it was spinning itself apart. and it was the same grade of oil. but that shows the differences even between manufactureres.
i am a huge amsoil fan. buy what was working well for you before and stick with it. piece of mind is priceless

Youput in a thicker oil. Does it do it when cold and warmed up too?I've never heard of Total oil, where did you get it? Did you fill the oil filter with oil before installing it?
Total Petroleum used to be in the US too, but they packed up and left. The grocery distribitor that I used to work for... Total Gas stations were our largest accounts, when they left we almost went under. All your eggs in one basket kind of thing.
It is decent gas and oil, they never had full syn just dino oil.
If you watch the WRC you will see that Total is a big sponser for rally racing. I believe that they supply most of the fuel for the Dakar Rally too.
I was going to say stick with the 10w-30 but you live in Canada and not knowing exactly where you live and not knowing how cold it gets...
Living in West Michigan it gets signle digits at night and high 20's low 30's during the day. A week or so of below 0 in Februrary.
I have been running Mobil 1 15w-50 for the last year, including winter, but the truck was parked inside at night, this time I am going to use M1 5w-30 for the winter so we will see how noisy the engine gets. The truck will be outside this winter, the Volvo gets the garage.
Will go back to 15w-50 for the summer though.

Spike, I live in southern Canada. On a normal winter, we get much less snow than your northern states, but we get nights in January and februarywhere it can drop as low as -40 F to -20 Fand normal day temp for those months are around 14 F. So let's say that it gets cold, which is why I use 5W40 oil for the winter. The quartz series of total oil is synthetic.
Didn't notice if it does it when cold, but it does it when warm cause I stop by the mailbox on my way home and let the engine run for the 30 seconds that it takes. It didn't do it before that oil change, be it cold or warm.
I didn't fill the K&N filter with oil prior to installing it, but I never do so that doesn't apply here.
Now you guys have me wondering if I should really go ahead and change for the 5W30 Mobil 1 that I usually run for the winter months. It does usually get a bit noisier with the thinner oil, but this here is really surprising.
What to do ?!?

My engine is quieter with 0w30 compared to the 10w40 I was running previously.
Your 5w40 is thinner when cold (compared to the 10w30) but thicker when warm. Unless you live in places where the summer temperature is high (Texas, the south) I would stick with a Xw30 oil. I am pleased with the switch to 0w30 Mobil 1.
Cheers,
Pete

I run 15w40. But then again its novemeber and it was 80* today. 65 at night.
Keep in mind these engines are Flat Tappet motors and need a thicker oil (at least I am pretty sure you are suppose to run a thicker oil in flat tappet).. I know a few people who live up north and run 10w40 because they think 15w40/50 is too thick.

I run every car I have with 5w30 summer and winter. Both of the run great.
I live in southern Canada but we have a really crappy climate. In winter it can get as low as -30 C and in summer as hot as 40 C..... sorry I don't have the Fahreneight equivalent
