Thicker oil is not the answer in cold weather. We used to use tranny fluid back east when it got cold. 50w oil will be like frozen honey in -20 below. You want an oil that is gonna circulate quickly. Dont let a little lifter knock scare you. I would be more scared of my oil not circulating for 10 mins until my engine is hot.

I live in southern Canada but we have a really crappy climate. In winter it can get as low as -30 C and in summer as hot as 40 C..... sorry I don't have the Fahreneight equivalent
About the only ting I like about the cappy new cell phone thatI bought is the convertor it has...-30C is -22F
+40C is +104F
I can also do KM to miles.

It may not kill your engine right away, but there is no reason not to prefill your oil filter before you install it, especially if you use an oversized filter. That's a big space to fill before pressure builds up. The oil is probably fine, it's a little thicker but not that thick. Did you check your oil level again after you drove it?

I think you need a thicker oil...
0w30 oil is no thinner than 5w30 or 10w30 at operating temperature. The Mobil 1 0w30 is 0.3 centistrokes off of the 5w30 Mobil 1 (11.0 v. 11.3 @ 100C). Not much to get worried about.

yeah, did some research tonight. lol. learned a couple things.

I don't see why his engine is knocking or what not with a 5w40.. I use a 15w40 and it runs fine.

like you said, it is the same at operating temp.

maybe he needs to switch back to a w30...

I would think an engine would knock with a thinner oil, being a flat tappet.

idk im tired and confusing my self hha

I would use a 10w40 but I like the extra protection/wear additives the diesel 15w40 has. oohhh ya

If I ever move to a hot climate I am seriously considering Mobil 1 5w40 Diesel. That or their 0w40 oil. Of course I wish I had a diesel to put it in...

All right guys, paid attention to cold engine temp noise and it ain't there. I have to drop my daughter in school on my way to work, and her school is 2 blocks away. I start the Disco and no noise, I get to her school and the engine is still cold, no noise. Leave her school and go to work and open my door before shutting of the engine and thattap dancerunder the hood is auditionning for ' so you think you can Dance '

So you guys are saying that W40 would be too thick ??? Come to think of it, over a year ago, before switching to full synthetic, I had tried 10W40 and had similar results. MMMMMMM????

Is it worth switching to W30??? in the way that if I keep W40 oil I'll damage the engine ???? That noise has to affect something..No ??

Just dont want to give the wife more ammunitions to blast the Disco again!!!!!

You can save the w40 oil for a hotter season. Switch to 5w30 and see what happens. The w30 is thinner and will flow more than a w40 oil.

Pete

Darover,
What year is your truck, how many miles on her?
The oil is not your problem. If you are a high miler I would consider get an oil pressure test performed. Yes, normally you would check the pressure but you may have a high end issue. That being said, if you are sure the sump pick up tube is clean then get the pressure test run, cold at idle, cold at 2000 RPM's then operating temp. at idle and at 2000 RPM's.
Bet you'll find your problem here.
