Default Think I lost a lifter....

Long story short, I towed home a derelict S3 109 Sunday. Noticed this tapping on the way home. Truck wasn't over heating, no oil pressure lamp....although it did flicker a couple times at idle when I was almost home. Got home, hopped out, and here is the noise.

Does it all the time, dead cold. Warm. Operating temp.

SO, I need to do my timing cover seal and associated bits anyways....thinking if I'm going to do lifters (all of them) I may as well pop a cam in.

Mission creep, I know.

Thoughts?

Crower comes to mind. I really don't know other vendor/manufacturers.

I really just want more TQ, but nothing heavy. I understand camming a stock engine is arguably pointless w/out other mods....but I'm here at the core, so....yeah. Everything else is easy.

Only two companies know I Off hand are Crower and Kent. I've got the Kent H180 "Torque", most guys get one of the Crowers probably because they're based in the US and are more well known. I'm very pleased with my personal cam choice, but you can't go wrong with the Crowers either.

Interesting to see how similar it sounds to a slipped sleeve to the untrained ear-- I've since had my sleeve fixed but if I was a normal mechanic not accustomed to hearing the piston slap I'd totally think it was a lifter like this is.

I did a compression test and they were all between 150 and 165 PSI. Plugs were fine, except for number.....7? (the last one on the left bank) It had some crud on it. So, not sure if that hole is working proper. Def wasn't as clean as the other 7 plugs.

I'm going to go in for some exploratory disassembly. I really want it fixed as this is my terrible weather vehicle.

My 2004 D2 has developed the same noise so one day soon I'll be rebuilding the top end, etc. Which Crower cam is the correct item? 53229 or 53230? Anything special for lifters etc or regular replacement parts? Thank you.
