Thoughts about 2002 Disco II
Hello All,
I've read through everything, and can't really make up my mind. I have the opportunity for a 2002 Discovery II with 45,000 miles. It has brush guard/rear light guards, ladder, lights on the brush guards, rock sliders and has never been off road. A dealer looked it over and said the only thing that was wrong was a crack in the radiator, which has now been completely replaced by the dealer. The price is $9500. Now, things I have been considering are: suspension is probably going to need to be replaced (currently stock air ride) and something will probably fail with the engine at some point. Would you go for $9500?
Thanks!

1. Use www.statewidelist.com to search your state for all rovers, and you will get a feel for the price ranges. Indexes craigslist and outputs grouped by metro area.
2.. re: something will probably fail with the engine at some point - you said that right! And may have already started. A cooling system problem can be catastrophic, one good overheat can (not always) cause a cylinder liner to slip, etc. The radiator did not crack just because it was worrying about the raise the alternator got. It cracked under pressure from something.
3. While price seems high to me (and I'm cheap), the best price ever reported on this forum (besides outright "gift" from a relative or friend) was a D2 for $2000 with 117 miles on it, garage kept by an eccentric owner, with oem gas in it.
4. See if you can negotiate an extended warranty if you decide to buy it. Rovers, like many beautiful things, are high maintenance.
5. Maybe look at some others in your area before pulling the trigger. Maybe indy mechanical inspection unless from a Rover dealer (we must assume they are smart enough to dispose of the lesser ones by auction).

$6000 to $7000 is a fair price, yes, I under stand it is a low mileage truck and has a few frills, but you can buy lots of 03's in the $8000 range.
Might stretch another $500 but don't let them kill you on the deal.
I would also suggest you have another shop do a pre-purchase inspection to verify there are no hidden problems lurking.
