Default The "Tick" - how long have you driven with it?

For those who have had "the tick" that appears when engine is warmed up, from a slipping sleeve, how long have your driven with it? And what did you do to resolve it? I do not suffer from this malady, but wanted a quick survey to see opinions. Thanks in advance for your response.

Mine has been ticking for 30k miles and has not gotten any worse. At this point I dont even notice it any more and dont plan to do anything about it unless a cylinder wall cracks.

I doubt yours is a slipped sleeve, 30,000 miles you would have over heated and or lost coolant.

Which begs the question of how many people rebuilt their engines or trashed their trucks because they thought they had a slipped sleeve.

And if it is a real slipping sleeve, not any of the other "pretenders"; how long could the vehicle be driven before other problems come home to roost?

My 2002 had the ticking when I bought it 5 month ago (@143,193 miles). It starts ticking @ around 145 degrees F. It is used as a daily driver(currently it is my only vehicle). The tick comes from driver side head area. The only thing I did to the engine was switch to Rotella oil (tick got louder). My first Disco was an '04, I drove that for 3 years(70k to 110k miles) with mobil1 synthetic, never heard a tick. This one I got for cheap(under 4K) so I'll drive it with the tick till it die's(currently at 146,700) and then call the wrecker.

Are you using Rotella T6 or T?

My engine definitely got a lot noisier when I ran T.

I've had more of a knock then a tick for about 30k. Starts when it gets warm or on really hot days.
I burn about a qt every 1500 miles. Drip a little coolant. It doesn't over heat and has plenty of pep and power.
I ran rotella t, the Dino stuff, for about 15k miles. Didn't do a thing. Actually I seemed to noticed it more. I suspected cligged lifters so I would use engine flush sometime between changes and that didn't seem to work.

I'm running extended life valvoline 10w40 now. Still have the knock. Hoping it lasts another 12 months so I can take advantage of the valvoline engine guarantee.

After reading the other post about the main bearing, I'm suspecting this might be my knock. As it appears to be coming from deep underneath. I still have not pulled individual wires while its running, but am still leaning towards bearing as opposed to liner.

I'm running Rotella T not T6.It does not seem to burn oil and the only cooling system problem I've had was a leaking TB heater plate which I by-passed.
