Default ticking sound caused by loose timing chain?

Have had a ticking sound for some time. Was told it was bearings, a lifter, and oil pump. I tried seafoam, 20/50 oil, but nothing changed the sound. I pulled the oil pan and checked the bearings but tbey seem fine, a bit of side to side movement. The chain was really loose though. Oil pump looked fine. So could the loose chain be making a ticking sound. Seems like sound is at idle only.

Sound not present cold, comes on when warmed up? Sound goes away at higher rpm? These are common with a slipping sleeve, which can be pinned.

You can also listen "thru" a yard stick and localize where it is coming from. Oil pump when cracked can make that sound.

So, how mechanical are you?
If it were the chain, and it most likely isn't, you should not start the engine again.
What year is your engine, how many miles on it and is the noise coming from the top or front of the engine?
Wish you would have asked this before you jumped into it cause by your description of the chain, it needs to be replaced and if over 100,000 miles the pump as well.

I had leaks from the crank case and front seal, water pump was old so I went ahead and dug in to replace the gaskets, water pump, timing chain, oil pump, etc. I was just kinda hoping I would come across my noise problem in the process.

Theres around 90k on the motor that I put in some time back. The sound is coming from mid engine to bottom, hard to tell.

Might want to read my sticky at the top of this section on valve train noise. It may be a good guide to what may be going on.

So despite a very loose timing chain I still have the sound. I thought that if there was a slipping sleeve coolant would get into the cylinder and cause a misfire?

did you happen to look at the oil pump gears while you were in there?

Because they can crack and still make some pressure, just not as much.

Did you read up on the valve train noise, for the most part, that is the only thing that ticks assuming you do not have a cracked sleeve.

Oil pump is fine.

While in park I think the ticking continues as it climbs into higher rpm's. At least I can hear it ticking still while pushing the gas. The ticking doesnt seem to get louder just faster.

Mike, All I see in D2 is your sticky on Major Service.
